As Paris was busy hosting the Summer 2024 Olympics, communities and stakeholders in Southern California were looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, and residents started posting to social media to share their excitement and concerns over hosting the games in their communities. Today, LA Metro relies on AlphaVu’s DataVu platform and its new chat agent called “Ask Your Data” to measure the public’s opinion on the agency’s readiness to deliver service for the 2028 games.

The 2024 Paris games drew an estimated 10 million tourists from around the world, and host cities rely on the efficiency of public transportation to ensure spectators can move easily between hotels, event venues, and other area attractions. LA Metro operates one of the largest transit operations in the United States, serving nearly 1 million weekday riders and a service area covering more than 1,400 square miles, and the agency has already begun preparing its system to handle the increased ridership within the event zones.

The agency constantly uses community input to make system improvements, and the agency asked AlphaVu to analyze this input to understand both the themes and specific suggestions related to Olympic preparations. AlphaVu analyzed more than 51,000 inbound engagements collected over a 50-day period surrounding the Summer 2024 games. These comments were aggregated from LA Metro’s customer reporting platforms, the agency’s customer relationship management system, and online media channels.

Analyzing Community Sentiment on Olympics

AlphaVu found nearly 800 posts and comments from these channels related to LA 2028. Our team specially trained an AI algorithm to score the sentiment of comments to uncover the feelings expressed by each statement. Comments and posts with text and emojis are scored individually, and the platform is able to detect subtle nuances to scoring a comment’s sentiment. For instance, the term “LOL” doesn’t necessarily reflect a positive sentiment. Sometimes, it can be used as a negative expression. Our platform was programmed to accurately discern context clues to determine whether the comment earned a higher or lower sentiment score.

The DataVu platform uses both customer data and publicly available information to pinpoint where comments are made, so customers can see how topics and public opinion vary by each community – even down to the household level. Geographic areas can be defined by ZIP code, city council district, service area, or any other designation that’s important to our customers. Community outreach teams can use this data to tailor their outreach strategies to each neighborhood, and this information empowers government relations teams to bring specific constituent concerns to local electeds. In this example, LA Metro can see which ZIP codes had the highest volume of comments related to the Olympics.
